I eat out a lot which is not good when you are trying to save money. On the other hand I have developed one good habit when I am eating out, I usually don’t order a drink and instead get water with extra lemon. Add a couple Splenda and you have poor mans lemonade. I like the taste  and the savings adds up. I was at a hotel for lunch recently that charged $6 for ice tea! Even non-alcoholic drinks are a big profit item for restaurants. Try the lemonade mix and see how it compares to your usual drink. If you don’t like lemonade try carrying a small Crystal flavor package with you.

The first of the five fundamentals and in my opinion, the most important is to focus on the “gap between what you earn and what you spend”. In order to have moneypower you must follow this simple rule. But why does this seem to be so difficult? It could very well be that you are living out of your means and your fixed expenses are more than you can afford.  More likely it could be the fact that you do tend to overspend here and there on unnecessary things.  Here are some ideas to think about when you are going about your everyday routine to help get you started on being conscientious of your spending habits and creating more moneypower.

Did you know that you could earn cash back and rewards when you go out to eat?  Not many people know about dining rewards so I though I would share them with you.  I have been using two free dining reward programs for a couple of years – http://www.opentable.com/ and www.rewardsnetwork.com.  Open Table is a restaurant reservation website that you can earn reservation points that are in turn redeemable for restaurant gift certificates.  Rewards Network is a program in which you choose your reward program such as cash back or airline miles and receive these rewards when you dine at participating restaurants.

free_software

As an IT professional I have used quite a bit of software over the years. I also have not purchased any software for personal use. Everything that I use has been completely free to legally obtain. With so many freeware versions of software out there, you shouldn’t have to pay for software either. While this software might not be the very best out there, I find it more than sufficient to use in my everyday life. Below I have listed all the software that I use, and the places where you may download them for free.

Have you ever been standing in line at a non-grocery store waiting to pay and someone in front of you has had a printed coupon they are using?  Chances are they received the coupon signing up for that store’s eClub.

If I know I am making a trip to a specific store, I will visit their website to see if they have an eClub to sign up for.  When you sign up for a retailer’s eClub, you will periodically receive emails with sale notifications, coupons, and special offers.

Below is a list I have composed of retailers that send you a welcome discount coupon email almost immediately after signing up.  Most of the links send you directly to the sign up page.  If you are directed to the home page, scroll down to the bottom of the page and you should see the box to enter your email address.

Animals are a loveable addition to your family. The cost of a pet however, can be overwhelming and sometimes you can find yourself in a pickle trying to pay for all of the expenses for basic procedures. I just got a puppy a couple of months ago and I don’t know how I would have paid for all of her vet bills without the Wellness Plan that Banfield Pet Hospital offers. Banfield offers affordable monthly payment plans that are broken down into four different categories: Primary, Basic, Basic Plus, and Optimum.  You select this plan based on pet’s needs, age, and health. The plans do vary in cost but, not by much!

plasmaTV

I have a 47″ plasma TV and no cable…that’s right, you heard me NO CABLE! However, even though I find myself feeling moderately disconnected from the world at times; I realize that not having a cable bill saves me money. The average cable bill monthly is anywhere from $30-60 dollars for a basic package. That is an estimated $360-720 dollars a year. A premium package could cost upwards of  $70+ a month, or $840+ a year.

Any purchase or investment should look at the return. If I was paying $60 a month for cable, but only watching a few hours of programming a week, was it worth it? One might want to put an actual cost to the hour. If one watched 10 hours of television a week and paid $60 in cable bills, they would be paying $1.50 for every hour of cable. Obviously heavy viewers would find more return on their payments and might consider it worth every penny. But casual users need to examine the return and decide if they can manage with a reduced or terminated cable package. Cable television isn’t the only answer for in home entertainment and here are some media alternatives that I utilize.
